Sabres open rookie camp

HSBC Arena- - It’s almost that time again—time for hockey. And the Buffalo Sabres are headed to the ice this week to begin their workouts.

The Sabres opened their rookie camp bright and early Monday morning with close to forty players on the ice at HSBC Arena. It’s a chance for the young players to impress the coaching staff before the vets show up.

Young veteran Tyler Ennis says it feels good to be back on skates.

“It felt good. It was a good skate,” Ennis said. “It felt good to get the feet going again and get to see everyone out there. And it was a good skate. The body feels good and we were skating a little bit before camp, and it’s good to get back in the swing of things.”

The rookie training camp continues the rest of this week, with scrimmages at HSBC Arena on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The full training camp, including the veterans, opens this coming Saturday.

Today’s poll on buffalonews.com. I have to agree on this one - CJ Spiller has got loads of potential but he’s just not ready to be our featured back yet - Jackson’s got the goods.

Bills LB Posluszny to miss about 3 weeks

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills middle linebacker Paul Posluszny will miss about three weeks after the starter hurt his right knee in a season-opening loss to Miami.

Providing the update after practice Monday, coach Chan Gailey didn’t disclose any details of the injury, except to say tests revealed it wasn’t as severe as first feared. There’s a possibility Posluszny might not be back until Oct. 24, when Buffalo returns from its bye week to play at Baltimore.

Posluszny was hurt while tackling running back Ronnie Brown on the opening play of the third quarter in a 15-10 loss Sunday. Trainers examined Posluszny’s knee before the player jogged to the locker room.

He then returned a few minutes later wearing what appeared to be a brace. After testing his knee along the sideline, Posluszny then walked back to the locker room.

The injury is the latest setback for Buffalo’s 2007 second-round pick out of Penn State. He missed most of his rookie season with a broken left arm, and then missed four more games last year after breaking a bone in the same arm.

The Bills are already thin at the linebacker position as they prepare to play at Green Bay this weekend.

Akin Ayodele, signed last week after Kawika Mitchell was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury, and Keith Ellison are candidates to start in place of Posluszny.

Starting outside linebacker Reggie Torbor did not play Sunday while continuing to recover from a chest injury. Gailey said there’s a chance Torbor could be ready to play this week.

Gailey said reserve safety Cary Harris will not play this weekend after hurting his hamstring against the Dolphins.

The Bills also signed tight end Rob Myers to their practice squad. He replaces tight end DajLeon Farr, who was placed on the practice squad/injured list due to an undisclosed injury.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, Myers was available after being released by New England on Sept. 4. He split last season on New England and Philadelphia’s practice squads. He was initially signed by the New York Jets last year as an undrafted free agent out of Utah State.

A little too late for Bills in loss to Miami

There was a coming-out party at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday.

It wasn’t the one the crowd of 69,295 was hoping to see.

Miami’s big offseason acquisition, linebacker Karlos Dansby, was the dominant player on the field in the Dolphins’ 15-10 season-opening victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills’ big offseason acquisition? He was squished by the Fish. Rookie running back C.J. Spiller touched the ball 11 times and managed just 14 total yards.

The Bills’ new play caller? Coach Chan Gailey got off to a forgettable start. His offense managed just nine first downs and 166 net yards, the lowest in 20 games for the Bills.

Buffalo’s seven-year offensive slump, it seems, isn’t going to evaporate overnight.

5 Reason to Believe in the Buffalo Bills

Nobody seems to be giving the Bills much credit these days.  Despite an impressive preseason from the offense, nobody is mentioning the Bills as a potential sleeper team in the AFC East.  Sports Illustrated predicts them going 2-14, ESPN has them ranked 31st in Week 1 of the NFL Power Rankings, and Las Vegas oddsmakers have the Bills as 120 to 1 long shots to win the Super Bowl.
